It's never too early to think deer hunting; spring is a great time of year to build some new stands

    This is a tough time of year for those of us who love hunting and fishing.

What's a guy or gal suppose to do between April 1 and the walleye opener in May?

How about get some deer stands ready and do a little brushing? Yes, I said get deer stands ready even though the archery opener is still six months away and the rifle opener is even further down the road.

Alien invaders!

     Time is nearing when our boats will replace the ice on our favorite lakes and there will be an influx of campers heading to their favorite locations.

All this activity increases the chances of transferring alien invaders (invasive species) from one location to another. 

We need to be vigilant in our role of protecting our beloved lakes and forests.

More winter means more time to get ready for the spring fishing opener

    It's been a while since my last entry. It has been a long difficult winter for me. I spent about two-and-a-half months with a serious kidney infection and I wasn't able to do much fishing this winter. As of a week or so ago, the doctor has finally given me a clean bill of health and I am getting ready for the up coming open water fishing season.

This winter tough on deer
     The winter of 2012-13 has abruptly changed since the last Winter Severity Index report in early February. Over 30 inches of snow has fallen in the last month in Northern St Louis County, with three storms in the 6-inch-plus category.

For northern forest whitetails, the going has gotten tougher.  All snow measurement stations are currently over the 15 inch threshold.

     The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service has financial assistance programs to help fund conservation practice installation on your land. 

    Some examples of practices that have been funded in the past include: Tree and shrub planting, brush and browse management, windbreaks, wildlife openings, forest stand improvement, stream crossings and grazing systems.

 Racing on Rainy closes out the 2013 KCPRO-East Season

     

Rainy Lake was the location of the final race event of the season on March 9. It was a points race with the Super Stock 120 points champion yet to be decided.

It was fun to be back in I’Falls after not having raced there the last couple of years, although the snowy ride north in the early morning hours before dawn left you wondering about track conditions for the day.

North Country Trail adventure of a lifetime
Minnesota Hiker's 4,600 mile journey across the country
On March 27, Luke Jordan, of Minnetrista, Minn., left Lake Sakakawea State Park in North Dakota with a plan to hike the 4,600 mile North Country Trail, ending in October in Vermont.
 
If he reaches his goal, he will join an elite group of only three people to thru-hike the North Country Scenic Trail.

The design behind the design
    After spending a good part of my young adult life fishing northern Minnesota - mostly the Alexandria and Perham areas - I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted to show with my tables. The hard part was how to make them look as real as possible.

The best/worst month of skiing in years
     It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

Sunday, March 10 was one of the best ski days of the season.  The snow was good, the jumps were perfect.


We did a little bit of helping out at a ski team fundraiser, but the majority of the day was skiing for fun!
Buying land and building a hunting cabin part III
     The dream of owning one’s own hunting cabin is possible even for the non-handy with proper planning.
